Madonna's new life in Portugal as she turns 60

By Meaghan Wray

Like with everything she does, Madonna is making sure that her 60th birthday is one for the history books! The music icon headed to Marrakesh for her milestone affair, where she’s toasting six unforgettable decades at a lavish resort with close friends. The Moroccan city is a short flight away from Madonna’s new home in Portugal, where the reigning Queen of Pop is proving once again that she’ll always live her best life. “I don’t believe there’s a certain age where you can’t say and feel and be who you want to be,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. Through the ages, this mantra has defined her career and her life choices – including uprooting her family to rediscover themselves in Lisbon.

The pop sensation’s time clearly revolves around her six children – Lourdes, 21, Rocco, 18, David, 12, Mercy, 12, and her two five-year-olds, Estere and Stella. She partially credits the move to the sunny European country to her 12-year-old soccer fanatic son. “My son David, who is going to be 13 on Sept. 24, has wanted to play soccer professionally for years … The level of football in America is much lower than the rest of the world,” she explained to Vogue Italiaas she graced the cover of its August issue. “I felt like we needed a change, and I wanted to get out of America for a minute.”

The American singer has lived all over the world, previously settling in London for a decade. But when it came to uprooting to the sunnier parts of the continent, she had three different cities in mind. “It was between Turin, Barcelona and Benfica in Lisbon. I went to all those places and tried to imagine myself living there,” she explained, adding that all of the cities offered something wonderful, but she had to consider all of her children. “So, I went with Lisbon, and it seemed the best all-around choice.”

While her first loves are her kids and her music – the “Hung Up” singer reportedly has a new album coming out this year, her first since 2015 – her second is riding horses. That’s what she and her family do on Sundays. “I live in Lisbon, in Lapa, but when I go horse riding I go to Comporta, I go to friend’s houses, I go to Alcácer,” she shared. “Whenever my son doesn’t have a soccer match on Sunday then that becomes an adventure day, and we would pick a place to go riding.” Sounds dreamy, right? As it inspires her adventurous side, Portugal has also lent itself to her music: “You can open the door to anyone’s house, go on the street corner and you’re always going to hear music.” She knows the music of Lisbon, fado, by heart, and it will no doubt influence her upcoming creative projects.

Madonna lives by her own rules, and she likes it that way. Speaking to The Cut in April, the singer opened up about the various “isms” she’s experienced throughout her career – most recently, ageism. “It’s an outdated, patriarchal idea that a woman has to stop being fun, curious, adventurous, beautiful, or sexy past the age of 40.” And in response to the critics, the GRAMMY winner has created her own line of skincare products, MDNA Skin – just another adventure, along with moving to Portugal, that’s kept her young at heart.
