The 34-year-old took to the stage in a stunning black ruffled gown, with her icy blond locks cascading in waves over her shoulders. It’s clear to see how meaningful this song is to Avril, who sings about her fight with Lyme Disease – which almost ended her musical career – with such passion. “Head Above Water” is an ode to her resilience and provides hope to fans who have always turned to the star’s music when the going gets tough.
Avril first performed the stunning song at the end of Sept., wowing Jimmy Kimmel’s audience in an ethereal white gown and long blond curls. It was her first TV appearance in years, and her determination to succeed was palpable. With lyrics like, “God, keep my head above water / Don’t let me drown, it gets harder / I’ll meet you there at the altar / As I fall down to my knees, don’t let me drown,” we’re willing to bet there wasn’t a dry eye in the studio.
The Napanee, Ont. native has been easing back into the spotlight over the past few years since revealing her health struggles in 2015. She made her red-carpet return in April following a two-year hiatus from the limelight, stunning in a semi-sheer black gown at the Race to Erase MS Gala, where she shared all of the exciting projects she’s working on. Speaking to E! News about her album, set for a 2019 release, Avril said her battle with the disease made way for powerful new music.
“Everything is brighter when you go through an experience like that. The simple things in life are what mean the most really. I’m happy to be here.” She added: “It’s a really powerful record. I’ve been writing songs that are really just powerful and true and honest and sincere and I think people will really be able to relate to it.” Never one to miss an opportunity to help others, the first track was released alongside a special-edition t-shirt that raises funds to help people with Lyme Disease through her Avril Lavigne Foundation.
