The TIFF Daily: What’s on September 5, 2014 (Bill Murray Day)

Here’s what should be on your radar on day two (Sept. 5) of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), from the buzziest screenings to the most happening parties.

Gala Presentation: Boychoir, 6:30 p.m., Roy Thomson Hall

Dustin Hoffman and Kathy Bates co-star in François Girard’s Boychoir, a film exploring the relationship between a demanding choirmaster (played by Dustin) and an 11-year-old student. The boy, while talented, must come to terms with the loss of his mother, who died in a tragic car accident.

Special Presentation: St. Vincent, 9:00 p.m., Princess of Wales Theatre

It’s ‘Bill Murray Day,’ which means there’s a Bill Murray premiere to celebrate. St. Vincent stars the 63-year-old actor in the role of a cash-strapped retiree who develops an unlikely relationship with his 12-year-old neighbour. It also stars Melissa McCarthy, Naomi Watts, Chris O’Dowd and Terrence Howard.

Gala Presentation: Ruth & Alex, 9:30 p.m., Roy Thomson Hall

Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman play a long-married couple in Brooklyn, New York. While they moved to the borough in the 1970s, gentrification has overrun the community and, in the process, Ruth and Alex are led to examine their love, life and definitions of “home” as they plan to sell their apartment.

A Celebration of Films: Mongrel Media party, 9 p.m., Evergreen Brick Works (By Invitation Only)

Mongrel Media has 19films in this year's festival! Boychoir, Clouds of Sils Maria, Foxcatcher and Infinitely Polar Bear are a few of the anticipated titles, and the international film distribution company is celebrating with a shindig. Expect Hollywood bigwigs, plenty of libations and a whole lot of dancing - it's the start of the weekend, after all!

Bachelor Party: Eligible Magazine's TIFF Bachelor Party, 8 p.m - 2 a.m., Flirty Girl Fitness ($25 in advance, $30 at the door)

Eligible Magazine is celebrating TIFF in conjunction with everyone's favourite guilty pleasure: The Bachelorand The Bachelorette. Former stars of the reality shows and current stars of Bachelor in Paradise - Chris Bukowski, Zack Kalter, Graham Bunn and Robert Graham - will be in attendance, and the red carpet will be hosted by Michael Stagliano, former star of The Bachelorette and Bachelor Pad.

The Awards Goes To: The Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative Awards, Trump Toronto (By Invitation Only)

Kicking off Trump Toronto’s TIFF celebrations is the Creative Coalition’s Spotlight Initiative Awards. The cocktail-friendly celebration honours actors every year, and past honourees have included Gerard Butler, Kevin Spacey, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Demi Moore, Emile Hirsch and Kate Bosworth.
