The TIFF Daily: What’s on September 4, 2014

Here’s what should be on your radar on the opening night (Sept. 4) of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), from the buzziest screenings to the most happening parties!

Opening Night Gala Presentation: The Judge, 6:30 p.m., Princess of Wales Theatre; and 8:00 p.m., Roy Thomson Hall

Roy Thomson Hall is in the heart of TIFF-land, so it is no surprise that it is home to some of the festival’s most anticipated films. The opening night gala this year is The Judge, a legal drama starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall. The film tells the story of a father and son with a broken relationship, but after the dad (Robert Duvall) is accused of murder, his lawyer son (Robert Downey Jr.) is left to pick up the pieces while dealing with his past.

Special Presentation: The Humbling, 6:00 p.m., Visa Screening Room/Elgin Winter Garden Theatre

Al Pacino stars in the latest from director Barry Levinson, the man behind Rain Man, Bugsy and Good Morning, Vietnam. Al plays an actor who’s greatest ambition is to always be playing a role, which includes parts within his everyday life. Due tothis persistent acting bug, the lines between fiction and reality are often blurred. The film also stars Kyra Sedgwick, Greta Gerwig, Dianne Wiest and Charles Grodin.

Special Presentation: Mary Kom, 9:00 p.m., Visa Screening Room/Elgin Winter Garden Theatre

Mary Kom is a new kind of acting role for superstar Priyanka Chopra. While she’s one of the most beloved Bollywood stars, a talented singer and a former Miss World, she has never made a transformation like she does in this film, which tells the story of India’s first female Olympic boxing medalist. The adventurous biopic traces Mary’s rise and rebirth, from early street fighting to a post-motherhood comeback trail.

Public Partying: Rock Steady, 9:00 p.m. – late, The Drake Hotel

The Drake Hotel is transforming into a festival hub for TIFF with ‘Rock Steady.’ The opening night party will have performances from Choir!Choir!Choir! and more, and guests can sit down with Speakeasy for free (and real) tattoos or Pinky’s Nails for free nail art. A fresh new tattoo and attention-grabbing nails definitely won't hurt getting that casting agent's attention during the festival...

Celebrity Gifting: 'IT Lounge Portrait Studio'

September 4 marks the launch of NKPR’s ‘IT Lounge’ celebrity gifting suite, which is expecting appearances from Naomi Watts, Sir Ben Kingsley, Chris Evans, Melissa Leo, Melissa McCarthy, Corey Stoll, Holly Hunter and more. Caitlin Cronenberg and W Magazine will be on site shooting portraits of visiting A-listers while they grab gifts from a variety of covetable brands.
