Take Five with...stylist Talia Brown: My TIFF essentials

Between meeting with new celebrity clients and shopping for familiar faces, stylist Talia Brown says she’s actually busiest before the Toronto International Film Festival even begins. For her, being prepared to take the stars from daytime events to evening premieres in style means having her inspiration and outfits organized in advance of the red carpet rollout.

“I spent a whole day helping somebody stock all of their outfits so that they don’t even have to think about it the week of the festival,” she tells Hello!.

Still, now that the curtain has risen on the 40 th annual fest, this fashion-lover is seriously busy helping her clients feel confident in their outfit choices. Here, Talia shares her TIFF essentials.

For both my clients and myself, I love to have blazers that look great from day to night. They’re something you can throw on when you’re cold, or even if you’re wearing a really fancy dress and all of a sudden you need to go to an event that’s not quite as formal. It’s the perfect pieces for warmth or for style. When I’m trying to get myself ready, I try to incorporate a Canadian label. Since we’re in Toronto, I think it’s nice to let local labels shine.

I love Pink Tartan because it’s Canadian and they just know how to cut for the woman’s body. I am also a fan of Artizia. Their sundresses are a great option for day, and their jackets are cut really well. This season, I’m finding that BCBG Max Azria has a lot of great outfits for evening. I really like a lot of the fringe details that they’re incorporating into their clothes. You also can’t go wrong at Holt Renfrew, the buyers there really know what they’re doing.

At TIFF time, eye care is everything because you don’t want to look tired. Touche Eclat by YSL is what I use to brighten up the eye area. Then, I use Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara. I also love NARS Blush in Orgasm. It’s the only blush I’ve ever owned. My first job was at Holt Renfrew and that’s where it was recommended to me.

I’m obsessed with Greenhouse Juice Co. I really like their green juices because they make you feel refreshed. Don’t get me wrong, I love candies and treats, but before TIFF I think it’s important to just stick to fruits and veggies.

When I do get time to relax, I like to go to the gym or do a yoga class. When it comes to my workout playlist, I’m so not cool. I really like to listen to old school Madonna or Justin Timberlake. I feel like if you know the words to the song, it helps to get you pumped up.

Talia also spilled on the 5 things every star needs to be red-carpet ready any time!

“I’m telling everybody to get a Shellac manicure in a shade that matches everything, like a pretty pink or red. It’s one less thing to worry about.”

You don’t know what the weather’s going to be like, so it’s better to be prepared and have the option to throw on a rain coat or a blazer.

Whether it’s a black or grey or pink theme, it’s nice if everything can interchange because a lot of people go from day to night during the festival and they don’t have time to change.

I try to tell people, if possible, have a pair of comfortable shoes with them during the day that they can switch out of before walking the red carpet in heels.

I definitely [look at what each star I work with has previously worn] because everybody has a sense of style. Everybody has certain cuts they feel comfortable in, or certain colours that make their eyes pop. That’s the thing, you really want people to notice their face, features and what makes them them!
